National Honor Society

Rising juniors and seniors with at least a 3.5 Cumulative GPA are eligible to apply for NHS.

Students are notified on Schoology in the summer with information about the application process.  Students eligible for membership must document service activities (48 hours for juniors, 72 for seniors) and will have 2 teachers and 2 members of the community fill out recommendations about character and leadership. These recommendations can be found in the application when a student is eligible to apply.

Students will document service activities completed during their high school career, including the summer (48 hours for juniors, 72 for seniors – This works out to an average of 24 per year). These can be service projects done with a group, either in or out of school, or done as an individual service project. Generally speaking, service activities are those which are done for or on behalf of others (not including immediate family members) for which no compensation (monetary or other) has been given.

For documenting the service hours, students will describe the volunteer activity, list the number of hours, date(s), and provide contact information (name and email or phone number) for a supervisor or someone who can verify the activity -- tracking in an excel file is a great idea. These hours must be completed before a student joins NHS. Applications are due in September.

Many service projects and volunteer opportunities have been restricted or limited due to Covid.  We lowered the requirement for this year’s applicants and may do so next year. You can seek out opportunities with groups at OOHS (like Interact Club), local organizations, and through websites like volunteermatch.org.
